Welcome to the Department of Languages, Literature, and Mass Communication. Our department invites students to immerse themselves in language and critical thinking. You'll discuss challenging literary texts, learn a new language or two, write engaging and insightful stories and poems, and share your ideas using video, radio, TV, and print. At our core, we believe in the power of language to teach, amuse, move, and inspire.
We sometimes forget that a degree that focuses on language means you will acquire a set of skills and abilities that prepare you for more than the familiar humanities-oriented careers. You will learn to organize ideas, assert and defend claims, and research. Employers will value your ability to solve problems and present ideas in effective language in a variety of modes to a wide range of audiences. You will think critically, having learned to weigh evidence, identify assumptions, evaluate persuasive appeals, and recognize faulty reasoning. Employers want smart, flexible, and creative employees, all hallmarks of a Colorado Mesa University graduate in Languages, Literature, and Mass Communication.
We have three BA programs:
- English
- Spanish
- Mass Communication
We offer several minors:

We invite you to study other languages:
- American Sign
- French
- Greek
- Japanese
- Latin

You'll enjoy small classes, state of the art classrooms, and opportunities to apply what you learn in real-world situations. Above all, you'll encounter exceptional faculty. You'll learn from Fulbright scholars, award-winning teachers, editors, poets, storytellers, critics, videographers, journalists, audio-engineers, TV producers, and PR experts. You'll notice how open and willing our professors are to help you in and out of the classroom. That desire to help students is what our students appreciate the most.
